What is a Dutch Shepherd?

Dutch Shepherds are a lively, athletic, alert and intelligent breed, and has retained its herding instinct for which it was originally developed. Since its original duties were to keep flocks of sheep in a particular location, it is able to run all day, and that is reflected in its physique and structure. The Dutch Shepherd was discovered as a naturally occurring shepherd's dog living in rural areas. It was developed as an all-purpose farm dog, working originally as a farm guard and livestock dog. In modern times they are a loyal family-friendly companion and competent working dog used for obedience, dog sports, herding, tracking, search/rescue, service animals, and as police dogs.

Are Dutch Shepherds good family dogs?

Dutch Shepherds make excellent family dogs. They are great with kids and other pets when properly socialized. They need an active environment that will keep them mentally and physically stimulated. When provided you'll have a loving, loyal, and obedient best friend for life.

Unlike other shepherd dogs, Dutch Shepherds are a very healthy breed. This is mainly due to them being a lesser known breed and strict Dutch breeding rules. They are known to be some of the healthiest and easiest to train.
